Approaching Global Climate Crisis with Psychology

This paper explores how psychological approaches can aid in addressing the global climate crises. The starting point is an outline of how climate change has historically been addressed in psychology, and the prevailing theoretical notions that inform current research approaches. On the basis of Robert Gifford’s seminal body of work, The Dragons of Inaction, it is critically examined to which degree the predominance of research in the psychological barriers to pro-environmental behaviour translates into means of individual change. Next, a social practice approach is introduced to explore change as the sustainable development of social practices. It is argued that existing psychological approaches are challenged by a disconnect between theory and praxis, making it unclear how they contribute to concrete scopes of possibilities in the face of global climate change. As an attempt to strengthen this relationship, an alternative approach that seeks to account for the contradictory conditions under which we attempt to address the climate crisis is presented.Denne artikel udforsker psykologiske forståelser af, hvordan vi forholder os til og handler på klimaforandringerne, og hvilke handlemuligheder disse forståelser giver os i mødet med klimakrisen. Afsættet er et kort rids af psykologiens og klimaforandringernes fælles historie og de grundantagelser, der præger det eksisterende forskningsfelt. Af central betydning for dette felt er Robert Giffords forskning i de psykologiske barrierer, der afholder os fra at handle på vores bekymringer for miljøet. Med udgangspunkt i Giffords ”dragons of inaction” (Gifford, 2011) undersøger jeg, hvilke muligheder for forandring der tegner sig ud fra den dominerende tilgang til klimaforandringernes psykologiske dimensioner. Herfra vender jeg blikket mod to alternative tilgange, hvor fokus er flyttet fra individet til sociale praksisser, for at se, hvordan forandring tager sig ud fra og igennem praksis. Jeg argumenterer for, at begge tilgange er udfordret af en frakobling mellem teori og praksis, hvorfor det resulterer i uklare bestemmelser af, hvordan psykologiske perspektiver på klimakrisen kan bidrage til konkret handling. Afslutningsvis præsenterer jeg en mulighed for at styrke relationen mellem teori og praksis ved at medtænke de betingelser, klimaforandringer sætter for vores forsøg på at handle på klimakrisen i praksis
