Presente sobre pasado : relaciones entre arquitecturas

The thesis is about the relations that interventions establish with the precedent architecture where they act. The work deeply analyzes the connection between the new part and the pre-existing architecture. The intervention in existing buildings is not something new. The approach of this investigation is based on the formal, material and constructive relation towards the existing part. A sensible and determining point in interventions is the meeting point between new and old. This connection is demonstrated in its concrete sense- as a space fragment where the contact is produced- and in its abstract sense- or relationship between architectures. This work is focus in the materiality of this connection. In first place we review the influences of restoration theories. The study of intervention projects (from Modern movement until nowadays) defines three families depending on the relation and connection established with preexistence. Those lines, that form the three chapters of the thesis, are: joints (differentiation), transition (continuity), and fusion (lock). Joints are connections used by the interventions to express a disruption of the new work with the existing language and its material. The old and the new. In this chapter we analyze some examples that present a space or neutral element as separation between existing and new. lt is the case of: Maison de verre, Castelvecchio and Goteborg 's city hall. The transition is the connection constructed by continuing the existing space and language. In this second chapter, we studied examples that do not make the distinction between old and new, but a homogenization continuing the existing language. lt is the case of: Goteborg's city hall 1934 version, London National gallery extension and the Spain national bank extension. Fusions are connections realized as a direct contact or lock with the existing building but with a different language. They don't reject contemporary language to subordinate to the existing one, but they mix. In this third chapter, we analyze examples that express a lock matching plans with the existing, but with a different language, and creating a tension among the different parts and languages to become a complex unity. Existing and new complement themselves. The parts, even being easily recognizable and identifiable, they form a whole; a monolithic unity. lt is the case of: Gugalun house, Kolumba museum, Utrecht city hall, Fouquet hotel intervention, and LP2. Described attitudes, transmit an appreciation of the past: a new element that wants to be different, in contrast to the existing; a new element as an extension of the existing; or a new element that wants to be integrated with the existing without neglecting their differences. The importance given to the idea, as guideline for the intervention, (found by Viollet-le-Duc into the existing building), becomes now in the concretion and appreciation of the existing singularities. The distinction between new and existing, coming from the moral judgment of Ruskin and the scientist restoration present in the Modern Movement's principles is still going on in certain interventions. The formal analogy defined by Capitel and Solà-Morales as the dialog established by certain interventions with the past, arises as alternative to the modern contrast. The hypothesis is that there is a sensibility change towards the architecture that precedes us. This work defense that the joint, or differentiation with the architecture of the past, weakens to become, through an analogical relation research , a merge between preexistence and new part. A unitary whole formed by recognizable times , but linking both architectures. This change of attitude towards the fusion can be explained by a self-criticism of our recent past, the Modern Movement and its promises, but mostly, as a demonstration of the present will that is to incorporate the presence of the past.La presente tesis trata sobre la relación que la obra de intervención entabla con la arquitectura existente a la que modifica, y profundiza en el análisis de la conexión entre las partes. Las intervenciones son el resultado de un posicionamiento frente a la arquitectura existente. Esto propicia diferentes posibilidades arquitectónicas y de diálogo con ella. El enfoque de esta investigación se fundamenta en la fisicidad establecida por la relación entre la arquitectura existente y la nueva. Un punto sensible y determinante en la intervención es el encuentro que se establece con la preexistencia. Esta conexión se manifiesta tanto en su valor concreto - o de fragmento del espacio donde se produce el contacto material entre lo existente y lo nuevo-, como en su valor abstracto -o de relación entre las arquitecturas. El trabajo se centra en la interpretación de los detalles constructivos de ésa conexión. En primer lugar se realiza un repaso de las influencias que las teorías de restauración arquitectónica han ejercido y ejercen en el modo de intervenir las arquitecturas existentes. A continuación se definen tres líneas según la relación y conexión establecida en cada caso de estudio con la preexistencia. Estas familias, estructura de los tres capítulos, son: juntas (diferenciación), transición (continuidad) y fusión (traba). Las primeras optan por una delimitación o separación física y espacial de sus elementos y por la distinción y diferenciación de sus arquitecturas. Expresan una actitud de independencia constructiva y formal, y la conexión establecida con lo existente se realiza a través de un espacio de separación o de un elemento intermedio, a modo de junta. Es el caso de: la Maison de Verre, la intervención del Castillo de Castelvecchio y la del ayuntamiento de Goteborg. En los casos de continuidad, las intervenciones se proyectan prolongando la arquitectura existente para completarla. La conexión deviene una transición de materiales, no hay interrupción. Es el caso de: la versión de 1934 para el ayuntamiento de Goteborg, la ampliación del Banco de España, y la de la National Gallery en Londres. Sin embargo ciertas obras de intervención actúan con un lenguaje propio, construyendo una traba material y solidaria con la preexistencia. Establecen con ella un diálogo que cohesiona las arquitecturas; una macla formal y material en la cual son reconocibles los diferentes lenguajes. Es el caso de: la Gugalun house, el museo Kolumba, el Ayuntamiento de Utrecht, el Hotel Fouquet, y el LP2. La tesis establece correspondencias entre teorías de la arquitectura (o del restauro) y soluciones planteadas por proyectos que resultan conceptualmente cercanos a ellas en la actitud o relación manifiesta -y que no tiene por qué coincidir con la desarrollada en su tiempo. La idea como pauta para la intervención, (que E.Viollet-le-Duc buscaba en el edificio existente), cede el paso a la concreción y a la materialidad del artefacto sobre el que se actúa. La distinción entre nuevo y existente derivada del juicio moral de J. Ruskin y del restauro científico, y presente en el uso del collage del Movimiento lModerno, se halla aún hoy en ciertas intervenciones. La analogía formal, definida por A.Capitel y l. de Solá-Morales como el diálogo que establecen ciertas intervenciones con el pasado, surge como alternativa ante el contraste. La hipótesis es que se constata un cambio de sensibilidad hacia la arquitectura que nos precede. La tesis defiende a través del análisis en detalle de una serie de obras, que la junta, o diferenciación física entre nuevo y original, se atenúa para expresar un diálogo con la arquitectura del pasado. La relación que con ella establecía el Movimiento Moderno, varía hacia una relación de continuidad y de fusión. Este cambio podría explicarse como una autocrítica hacia nuestro pasado más inmediato y sus principios, y como la constatación de un presente con voluntad de reincorporar la presencia del pasado.Postprint (published version
