Clonal selection of the main varieties utilised for the production of the DOCG Chianti Classico red wine was planned in the project ‘Chianti Classico 2000’ Research was initiated on 1988-89 with a systematic work performed in the production area of Chianti Classico, beginning with the identification of plants of the grapevine varieties ‘Sangiovese’, ‘Canaiolo nero’ and ‘Colorino’ having ampelograhic, sanitary, agronomical and technological interesting characteristics.
