Airports that have closely spaced parallel runways can have their arrival capacity cut in half due to inclement weather. The "Paired Approach " Concept would allow aircraft to perform dependent closely spaced parallel approaches to runways that are separated by as little as 750 ft during Instrument Meteorological Conditions. This would be achieved by enforcing longitudinal spacing constraints between the two aircraft by placing the trail air-craft inside a protection zone. This separation serves two purposes: to prevent a collision in the event that one of the aircraft deviates from the intended approach path, and also to guard against a wake vortex encounter.
