The saia (a full skirt of various colors) is complemented with the bata (a laced cotton blouse), the latter nearly always white. Over the shoulder or around the waist comes the pano da costa ( a long cloth similar to a shawl) and bound around the head is a silk or cloth torso (turban). Both the torso and the pano da costa derive from Muslim African cultures, the former being similar to turbans worn by North African Berbers.
