It is known that in vivo administration of bacterial endotoxin activates immune cells to release cytokines, these substances in turn enhancing hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function; additional evidence supports the existence of an immune-neuroendocrine sexual dimorphism.
