RAMAN INVESTIGATION OF STRUCTURE AND DYNAMICS OF CONDUCTING POLYIODINE CANAL COMPLEXES (BENZOPHENONE)$_{9}(KI)_{2} I_{7} CHCl_{3}{^{*}}$

Sloan Fellow.Author Institution:$(Benzonphenone)_{9}$ (KI)$_{2} I_{7} CHCl_{3}$ belongs to a group of polyiodine complexes between iodine and benzopheonone which exhibits the usual property of a large frequency dependent conductivity and, thus, indicating a major contribution due to ionic conductivity. Raman spectroscopy is used to investigate the nature of molecular motions and to derive information on the structure and dynamics of the iodine column. The effect of temperature is studied. Complexes can also be obtained by changing the solvent from chloroform to ether and by changing the cation from $K^{+}$ to $NH^{+}_{4}, Na^{+}$ or $Li^{+}$. Furthermore, the halogen can also be substituted. In order to understand the dynamics of conductivity and the ionic transport, we investigate the effect of these substitutions and the substitutional disorder (mixed crystals) on the structure and dynamics
