A representative collection of translations from major contributors to medieval logic and the philosophy of language. Boethius, Peter of Spain, Robert Kilwardby, Walter Burley, William of Ockham, and William Heytesbury are represented on such subjects as division, the categories, syllogisms, dialectic and demonstration, modal consequences, and the properties of terms. It is appropriate that the first volume of this series should begin with selections dealing with meaning and inference, since logic formed the basis of medieval philosophical education.
