Eros is one of the major figures in the ancient novels: he inspires love in the protagonists and even drives some novelists’ plots, for example those of Charito, Heliodorus, Xenophon of Ephesus and Longus. It is important to note that when this god is alluded to in the ancient novels, it is an opportunity for the authors to show their subtle knowledge of Greek lyric poetry, since Eros most often appears as a “bittersweet” god, as Sappho had described him.
