Une approche de la conservation in situ par l'étude d'un système semencier informel : cas du cocotier au Vanuatu (Pacifique Sud)

International audienceIn many small countries of the South Pacific, the production of copra has a predominant place in the rural economy. To provide high- yielding planting materials to farmers, coconut cultivars are usually selected by a research institution and improved seeds are produced in centralized seed gardens. In the Vanuatu archipelago, the dissemination of such a type of material is slowed down by the fact that the villages are difficult to reach, by the cost of transport and of the seeds, especially when the price of copra is low. So, farmers get their planting materials at a low cost mainly through an informal selection of seed selection and supply. In 1995, the COGENT network initiated a survey on the coconut cultivars that are conserved in situ by the farmers in Asia and in the South Pacific. In Vanuatu, the initial results of this survey show that there is a wide range of morphological types of coconut identified by the farmers and also a lot of uses which can be related to these types. The possibility to improve the informal system of seed supply while maintaining a large coconut genetic diversity by in situ conservation is discussed.La production de coprah occupe une place importante dans l'économie des petits pays du Pacifique Sud. Dans l'archipel du Vanuatu, la demande des planteurs pour du matériel végétal amélioré par la recherche et produit dans des champs semenciers centralisés est cependant fortement limitée par le coût des semences et les difficultés d'accès aux villages dans un contexte mondial marqué par le faible niveau des prix du coprah. Un système informel d'approvisionnement en semences pourvoit en grande partie aux besoins de planteurs suivant des modalités encore mal connues. Une étude a été initiée en 1995 par le COGENT afin d'inventorier les cultivars conservés in situ par les fermiers au Vanuatu. Les premiers résultats de cette enquête, réalisée suivant des méthodes participatives, mettent en évidence la grande variété de morphotypes identifiés par les planteurs et les usages en relation avec ceux-ci. Les possibilités d'amélioration de la gestion du système semencier informel par une « sélection à la ferme », tout en maintenant une diversité génétique, sont discutées
