La marche en ville : Une histoire de sens

International audienceThe theme of walk in the city occupied the great part of literature of XIXe and the beginning of the XXe century. Today, the figure of the flanor, described by Walter Benjamin, still dominates our representations. But, if walking in the city requires an art of seeing whose flanor remains an accomplished artist, it engages also the body and the senses of the pedestrian. The matter of this article is to reveal this sensory dimension of walk. It is based on a thematic reading of recent work of anthropology, sociology and town planning. Sometimes described like a "technique of the body", sometimes analyzed like a " ordinary social act ", walk remains "the instrument of composition of the city ". It is, more still, and it is the hypothesis that we defend, a means for the pedestrian of anchoring itself to the city.La thématique de la marche en ville a occupé une grande partie de la littérature du XIX et du début du XXième siècle. Au point au'aujourd'hui, la figure du flâneur, décrite par Walter Benjamin, domine encore nos représentations. Pour autant, si marcher en ville requiert un art du voir dont le flâneur demeure un artiste accompli, il engage aussi le corps et les sens du piéton. Le propos de cet article est de révéler cette dimension sensorielle de la marche. Il s'appuie sur une lecture thématique des travaux récents de l'anthropologie, de la sociologie et de l'urbanisme. Tantôt décrite comme une " technique du corps ", tantôt analysé comme un " acte social ordinaire ", la marche reste " l'instrument de composition de la ville ". Elle est, plus encore, et c'est l'hypothèse que nous défendons, un moyen pour le piéton de s'ancrer à la ville
