L'Allemagne à l'épreuve de la réunification et de la financiarisation: Une analyse des mutations du modèle allemand au prisme de l'institutionnalisme contemporain

This doctoral thesis pursues three inter-related questions of research. Specifically, it tries to:<br /><br />1) identify the sources of tension responsible for the intensifying difficulties encountered by Germany after 1990;<br />2) evaluate their consequences for the institutions underlying Germany's post-war model of “social market economy” and its coherence; and<br />3) assess the impact of institutional changes after 1990 on the structure, strategies, and specialization of industrial firms in that country.<br /><br />Identifying the principal forces behind the transformation of the German growth model, in particular the growing dominance of market-based finance and reunification, we have divided the dissertation into three different parts.<br /><br />The first part focuses on the progressive disintegration of the traditional bank-industry relation. This is followed by an evaluation of stock market developments and of changes in the ownership structure of the most actively traded companies.<br /><br />In the second part we study the major changes in the system of professional relations, with special emphasis on the model of reproduction and designation of principal actors.<br /><br />The third part constitutes the empirical verification, allowing us to measure the impact of shocks on the systemic coherence of the model and its comparative advantages. Here we analyze also how the pillars of German capitalism adapted to the constraint of shareholder value maximization, as well as the latter's impact on their structure and industrial strategy. We then concentrate our analysis on the specialization model(s) of the export industry.<br /><br />We end with a discussion of the long-term viability of the model's recent changes identified above.Les questions de recherche posées dans la thèse s'organisent autour de trois axes. <br /><br />(1) Localiser des sources de tension à l'origine des difficultés rencontrées par l'Allemagne à partir de 1990. <br />(2) Evaluer leurs conséquences sur les institutions qui soutiennent le « modèle rhénan » et sa cohérence. <br />(3) Estimer l'impact des évolutions institutionnelles connues par le pays à partir de 1990 sur la structure, la stratégie et la spécialisation des entreprises industrielles. <br /><br />Après l'exposé les principaux facteurs de tensions et d'évolution, à savoir l'installation des conditions d'affirmation de la prégnance de la finance de marché et la réunification, la thèse est organisée en trois parties. <br /><br />Dans la première partie, l'attention est focalisée sur l'érosion de la relation banque industrie. Est proposée une évaluation de l'état du développement des marchés boursiers et de l'évolution de la structure de propriété des sociétés cotées. <br /><br />Dans la seconde partie, nous nous consacrons à étudier les principales évolutions du système de relations professionnelles, puis celles du modèle de reproduction et de désignation des dirigeants. <br /><br />La troisième partie constitue le test de validité et le terrain d'épreuve permettant de mesurer l'impact des chocs sur la cohérence systémique du modèle et ses avantages comparatifs. Nous analysons la manière dont les « fleurons » du capitalisme allemand se sont adaptés à la contrainte actionnariale, ainsi que l'impact de cette dernière sur leur structure et leur stratégie industrielle. Puis nous concentrons notre analyse sur le modèle de spécialisation de l'industrie exportatrice. <br /><br />Une conclusion sur la permanence comme le changement connu par le modèle est alors proposée
