In the United States the process of renewal of some urban areas has become an issue conjuring up images of white yuppies stealing urban housing from ‘indigenous residents', hence a negative approach of gentrification. We will use the specific example of Harlem (New York City) to analyze such process which is considered inevitable by the City of New York. Is gentrification in Harlem a reality? We will also see that when it comes to housing and residential patterns, race is a dominant organizing principle. Harlem has, therefore, gradually become a black ghetto.
