At the end of the 1980’s, Harlem was dilapidated, suffering from an epidemic of crack addiction, and some described it as a war zone. Harlem needed rebuilding and reform which came in the form of gentrification. Gentrification in Harlem displaced many long-term residents and forced them to leave their homes and look for housing outside Manhattan. To an outsider, one may just see that Harlem has made significant improvements over the last thirty years. It may appear that Harlem has been revitalized since the people living in Harlem ha remained predominantly black.
