This paper deals with a borderline case of the history of the relics in the Middle Ages, in which both meanings of the word " invention " join together. In the XIIth century, during the construction of a new surrounding wall in Cologne, numerous human bones were brought to light. They were quickly identified as the supposed relics of saint Ursula and her companions, the eleven thousand Virgins, about whom until then only a few epigraphic testimonies were at disposal. But numerous questions arose as the bodies were found, and abbot Gerlac of Deutz had the idea to ask Elisabeth of Schönau (†1164 ), a cistercian nun known for the visions since 1152.
