In the 14th century, a “representation of the Shroud of Christ” appeared in Champagne: if the image is part of the tradition of Christ’s imprints printed in cloths, this designation raises questions. Where is this Shroud, presented in the singular as if there were only one, but of which, at the same time, more than a hundred sanctuaries claim to possess relics? During this century in particular, several new shrines asserted themselves in the South of France, leading to a trial between two of them, Toulouse and Carcassonne, in 1402.
