As an isolated territory, the diocese of Mende in the 12th century escaped the French royal authority and mainly fell under the count of Barcelona’s control, and later of the king of Aragon’s, who owned the Grèzes viscounty, and that of the bishop of Mende. After Louis VIII’s campaign in Languedoc in 1226, the Grèzes viscounty and Pierre VII Bermond’s lands in Gevaudan were seized by the French king. From the middle of the 13th century, the bishop and the king struggled for the judicial authority within the diocese. In 1269, the bishop of Mende, Odilon de Mercœur, took the question to the Parliament of Paris, claiming the exercise of the majus dominium in his diocese.
