During the reign of the Plantagenêt, the royalty played the essential role in choosing the bishops. Henri II and after him Richard the Lion hearted and king John tried to extend their power through all aspects and to impose their rules on the Church as well as in choosing of the bishops as in the matter of Justice but they have under their authority three different kinds of bishoprics : Angevin, Aquitaine and Anglo-Norman which react differently to the kings' taking the power over them. The English and the Norman bishoprics even though initiately associed, manifested however some differences in their attitude.
