Les évêques dans le monde Plantagenêt

During the reign of the Plantagenêt, the royalty played the essential role in choosing the bishops. Henri II and after him Richard the Lion hearted and king John tried to extend their power through all aspects and to impose their rules on the Church as well as in choosing of the bishops as in the matter of Justice but they have under their authority three different kinds of bishoprics : Angevin, Aquitaine and Anglo-Norman which react differently to the kings' taking the power over them. The English and the Norman bishoprics even though initiately associed, manifested however some differences in their attitude. The English Church tries particularly to recover with Thomas Beckett a certain independance vis a vis the royal despotism. With respect to Gautier de Coutances and Hubert Gautier they mark their cohesion and independance vis a vis the pope. All of the bishoprics show their esprit de corps against the tyranny of king John.Sous l'autorité des Plantagenet le pouvoir royal joue le rôle essentiel dans le choix des évêques. Henri II puis Richard Cœur-de-Lion et Jean sans Terre essaient d'étendre la mainmise royale dans tous les domaines et d'imposer leurs règles à l'ensemble de l'Église tant en matière de nominations d'évêques que de justice. Mais ils ont sous leur coupe trois épiscopats différents : l'épiscopat angevin, l'épiscopat aquitain et l'épiscopat anglo-normand, qui réagiront différemment à leur emprise. L'épiscopat anglais et l'épiscopat normand bien qu'intimement associés manifestent cependant quelques différences dans leur comportement. L'Église anglaise essaie notamment de recouvrer avec Thomas Becket une certaine indépendance vis-à-vis du despotisme royal ; avec Gautier de Coutances et Hubert Gautier elle marque sa cohésion et son indépendance vis-à-vis du Saint-Siège et l'ensemble de l'épiscopat manifeste son esprit de corps contre la tyrannie de Jean sans Terre.Pontal Odette.
