The lysozyme (N-acetylmuramide glycanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.17) from the denervated gastrocnemius muscle of frog was purified by cation exchange chromatog. using Amberlite XE 64 columns. The enzyme is quite stable even after heating at 100° for 2 min. The sp. enzyme activity increases progressively in the muscle with ref. to the period of denervation. The significance of increased lysozyme activity in the muscle as a consequence of denervation is discussed with ref. to atrophic processes of the muscle
