The Prevalence Of Diastolic Dysfunction In Patients With Heart Failure

This study was done in AHMED QUASIM & ALSHAB hospitals , from November 2004 to January 2005 . Objectives : the purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of diastolic heart failure & to identify the common causes of diastolic dysfunction in patients with diastolic heart failure. Methods: this was prospective hospital based study , study population were those who met Framingham criteria for heart failure , all patients with atrial fibrillation & valvular lesions were excluded Results : 50 patients were studied , 28 were females (56%) & 22 were males (44%) . Diastolic heart failure was present in 14 patients (28%) 10 patients with diastolic heart failure were females (71.4%) 7 patients with diastolic heart failure were above 60 years (50%) 50 % of patients with diastolic heart failure had hypertension as cause of heart failure, 28.6% had ischeamic heart diseases , 2 patients had thyrotoxicosis (14.3%) & one patient had tuberculous pericarditis (7.1%) Conclusion : prevalence of diastolic heart failure was found to be 28% , it’s more common in females highly associated with hypertension & more prevalent in above 60 years age group . Recommendations : evaluation of diastolic function is highly recommended in all patients with heart failure & more attention should be paid to patients with symptoms of heart failure & normal ejection fraction ,who need the same degree of medical care & management ,that needed by low ejection fraction counterparts
