The purpose of this thesis is to study the contents of an editorial column in The Tidings, Los Angeles Archdiocesan newspaper, in order to determine whether the column, as the editorial voice of the newspaper, did take temporal stands on temporal affairs, and if so, what stands and to what extent. Consideration will also be given to the question of the extent to which the two editors who directed The Tidings during the year, 1949, differed in their treatment of temporal affairs. This study will also attempt to determine whether readers could be confused regarding whether the temporal judgments represented the authority of the Church.
