The problem of this study is to determine the judgments of The Christian Century on the Roman Catholic church and the reasons set fourth by that magazine for these judgments, and to estimate the reactions which the presentation of its views suggests to the readers. In other words, the study will attempt to discover the standpoint taken from October 1944 to October 1945 by The Christian Century in regard to Catholicism on the contemporary scene and to present the evidence gathered by the editors to support their arguments, either pro or con. The sincerity of purpose of the editors will be considered by means of an analysis of their method of presentation, particularly by their techniques of persuasion.
