Peters urges closing of Boston churches of every denomination Sunday, but did not issue an official order for their closing• Boston Health Commissioner William C. Woodward said if there is an order requiring the closing of churches it should come from the State Department• Mr. Henry B. Endicott argued for the issuance of an order saying “if people have got to enter a church to pray and indulge in solemn devotions in these serious times then I have a wrong idea of religion. People might pray a little harder at home if churches are closed.”• Mayor Peters’ appeal to the churches said, “to prevent the further spread of this disease every possible step should be taken and every sacrifice should be made.” He pleaded with religious authorities to “suspend at once all gatherings of public worship until the present crisis has passed…the churches owe to the community a distinct duty in this matter.”• Gov. Samuel W. McCall and Henry B. Endicott, chairman of the State Emergency Public Health Committee jointly appeal to church authorities throughout the state to follow the example of Boston• Boston Health Commissioner Woodward orders closing of barrooms, bowling alleys, pool and billiard and auction rooms and soda fountains, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Sunday [Oct 6] until further order• State Health Commissioner Eugene R. Kelley and Federal Health Director, W.F. Draper declare that if they had the authority they would order the closing of every church and liquor saloon in Mass.• With exceptions, the general condition of Massachusetts cities and towns is improving• Dr. William F. Draper reported that 90 doctors have been sent to Massachusetts and 50 more are coming• More than 1000 nurses are still needed to cope with the situation• Low mortality and small number of cases in 1st Naval District and among Army men in Greater Boston. 32 new cases and two deaths were reported in the Naval District.
