Influenza Is Tightening On Central West

• Associated Press, Harrisburg, PA, October 2—• Dr. B.F. Royer, State Commissioner of Health, has closed every place of public amusement and saloon in Pennsylvania to prevent the spread of influenza.• Associated Press, Washington, October 3—• Reports to the Surgeon General of the Army and the Public Health Service indicate the continued spread of influenza.• New cases in army camps totaled 13,004. 930 pneumonia cases were reported compared to the previous day’s 876. There were 331 deaths as opposed to the previous day’s 271.• Total cases in camps number 113,731. There have been 8,575 pneumonia cases and 2,479 deaths.• Ten camps have reported an increase in cases; others reported a decline. Camp grant suffered the greatest influenza increase with 900 cases.• Camp Grant has also reported the greatest increase in pneumonia, with 183 cases and 35 deaths. Other camps’ pneumonia reports indicate Camp Lee with 85 cases and 31 deaths, and Camp Humphries with 53 cases and 20 deaths.• Secretary McAdoo announced that the Public Health Service has established a headquarters against the epidemic in New England in Boston More than 100 physicians have been sent there from communities less affected. Other physicians have been sent to Wilmington, DE; Chester, PA; Bethlehem, PA; Hopewell, VA; Wilmington, N.C.; Bath, ME; and Florence, AL.• All theaters and movie houses in Washington, D.C. have been closed.• There is much discussion on how to keep government employees from developing influenza that might hinder the war effort. The number of employees required to maintain war activities has pressured the volume of living space in Washington, D.C.
