• “Decrease Also Is Shown in New Cases Discovered.”• “Slight Hope that Crest of Epidemic is Passed”• “Accord General Wearing of Gauze Masks Is Now Under Consideration.”• 1,341 cases; 9,048 cases reported total• Commissioners debating suggesting or requiring the general wearing of gauze masks • Fowler suggested any war workers in offices or factories that should any signs of a cold be sent home immediately if they are not absolutely needed• Prospective war workers are to be discouraged from coming to DC; civil service has suspended new appointments and departments are to stop hiring until danger is past• Surgeon General Blue and Commissioner Brownlow joined forces to stop war workers from coming to the District: “To the Civil Service Commission that it should not call any more war workers to Washington until the epidemic has subsided and housing congestion has been relieved.”• When President Wilson returns to DC, an executive order may be required to stop additional war workers from entering the city• The departments are willing to cooperate but they do not have the authority or control to stop the workers from coming; why executive order will be needed• The Treasury Department has agreed to help though and they have brought the most people into the city for war work• Senators are coming down of the side of keeping more war workers out of the city at the time since crowded accommodations were not helping and the cases already known do not have enough doctors and nurses to care for themNewspaper article1,
