War Against Influenza Spread In City Continues; Decrease In Cases Noted During Day

Dr. William C. Hassler, City Health Officer, said that no more new cases were coming in thanshould be expected.' There were 1243 new flu cases for the past 24 hours with 90 deaths. 400 cases wereremoved from the figure on the basis that they should have been reported in previous days. The grand total forthe city so far is 15,999 cases with 677 deaths. Although there are fewer new cases, the number of pneumoniacases is rising. 'Pneumonia cases handled by the Emergency Service numbered 78 last Thursday, 83 on Friday,108 on Saturday, 131 on Sunday, and were expected to run still higher for yesterday.' The San FranciscoHospital and emergency hospitals were full yesterday and it was difficult to find available beds. 'The discharge ofconvalescent patients supplied some beds at the San Francisco Hospital, additional beds were secured and anew ward was opened.' Other facilities are being converted around the city to cope with the demand. Thevaccine is given over three days and those who have received it have suffered very mild symptoms or none atall. Dr. Hassler warned that masks should continue to be worn at all times.
