Triple Campaign To Stamp Out 'Flu'

The health department will undertake three campaigns today to stamp out the influenza. It willask the City Council to appropriate $35,000 to employ quarantine inspectors and nurses. At the same time agroup of men will be sent out to begin a process of elimination, by which it is hoped that every case of influenzacan be removed from factories, stores and shops.' With the quarantine ordinance in place, the health departmenthas noticed that 'cases are not being promptly reported.' The additional staff (135 inspectors and 50 nurses) willhelp with this issue. Additionally, the public is encouraged to report cases by phone. 'Within a day or two theBusinessmen's Committee is to provide Health Commissioner Powers with a big crew of three-minute men whowill speak in churches and theaters during the next two weeks in order to get before the public the factsregarding the flu.' 71 new cases and 7 deaths reported yesterday for a total of 4197 during the week. Dr. Powersnotes that the epidemic is moving quickly but with a low mortality rate at this point. This he attributes to thecampaign waged before the ban was lifted.Newspaper article
