57 Deaths From Grippe in Boston

• The danger of a further spread of the grippe epidemic has appreciably decreased according to physicians in Eastern Mass who have been struggling with the situation since August 28• From 10:00 p.m Friday until 10:00 p.m. yesterday in Boston proper there were 57 deaths from influenza and 23 from pneumonia• There was an increase of 13 of influenza and 13 of pneumonia over the previous 24 hours• Total influenza deaths from Sept. 14 to Sept. 21, inclusive, has been 238 and from pneumonia, 95• In nearly every community in this vicinity the crisis appears to have passed and further improvement is expected this week• In the First Naval District only 28 new cases were discovered, compared with 150 Friday and 113 Thursday• The Radio School [Cambridge] was the only place in the entire naval district where a large increase in cases was reported• The total number now in the First Naval District is 2947, with 104 deaths• More than 20 wounded and sick soldiers were removed from City Hospital to places nearer their homes. This transfer of soldiers has been going on daily• Six deaths among the Merchant Marine were reported• No city has been so seriously tested as Quincy. They are mostly shipbuilders at the Fore River and Squantum plants• In Fields Corner, twelve policeman and 38 telephone operators are ill• Health Commissioner William C.Woodward says the mortality records sow that men between 20 and 45 appear to be the most susceptible to grippe, while children under 6 and aged persons figure largely in the lobar pneumonia list • During the week there were only three grippe deaths above the age of 42. The youngest was age 3. Pneumonia deaths included three infants• A firm stand in favor of keeping Boston public schools is taken by Dr. William H. Devine who says pupils are safer in the schools than in the streets• 362 cases of grippe have been reported among school children to Dr. Devine• Dr. William H. Devine said, “Medical inspection with a staff of physicians, nurses and 2000 teachers offers the most effective measure for the prompt detection of the disease. With schools in session all pupils are present and accounted for. This affords a grasp of the situation that means an intelligent handling which obviously cannot be done with more than 100,000 children scattered through the community.”• Superintendent Thompson coincides with this view and believes the schools should remain open• Back Bay and Beacon Hill are about the only sections of Boston where the epidemic has not made great inroads• Among the school population it is a “curious fact that the most favorable reports come from the congested districts.”Newspaper article1,
