In the Great War, Wanda Pełczyńska née Filipkowska (1894-1976) served as a courier, demonstrating her extraordinary courage and charisma as well as great devotion to Józef Piłsudski and a lifelong commitment to his idea of an independent Polish state. When Poland reappeared on the map of Europe, she began promoting gender equality both as an acclaimed author and editor of women's magazines and as an MP in the 4th-term Sejm (1935– –1938), elected from the list of the Nonpartisan Bloc for Cooperation with the Government. After the German–Soviet invasion, Pełczyńska became involved in the activities of the Polish Underground State, for which she had been held in the Lukiškes Prison in Vilnius.
