In recent times, attention has been given to alternative food networks (AFNs), which are considered to be more sustainable than conventional food systems. AFNs are forms of food provisioning with characteristics different from mainstream modes. Some of their attributes can be locality, social justice, ecological sustainability and economic viability. However, there are criticisms regarding the overall sustainability promise of AFNs which relate to sufficiency of impact, possible countereffects and relevance of impacts.
