U teorijskom dijelu rada analizirani su postupci otvrdnjavanja površine nehrđajućih čelika boriranjem, nitriranjem i prevlačenjem iz parne faze postupcima fizikalnog i kemijskog naparivanja. U eksperimentalnom dijelu provedena su nitriranja u plazmi na uzorcima od nehrđajućeg austenitnog čelika X5CrNiMo17-12-2 na temperaturi 430 °C u trajanju 8 h, 12 h i 24 h te na 510 °C u trajanju 8 h i 16 h. Na nitriranim uzorcima je ispitana tvrdoća površine, otpornost na mikroabraziju i određena je dubina nitriranja.
