This article is an analysis of the moment of rupture between Spinoza and Descartes on the concept of will. The will or free will in Descartes involves the assertion of degrees of freedom, the freedom of indifference and “the best freedom”. We analyze Spinoza’s first published works, Principles of Cartesian Philosophy and Metaphysical Thoughts, to point out this moment of rupture. In these early works, Spinoza aims to expose only the Cartesian philosophy without entering into controversy with prevailing cartesianism, but this does not prevent him of adding statements not contained in the Descartes’s works.
