N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors lay at the core of excitatory glutamatergic transmission and their dysfunction has been implicated in a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders. One such recently described disease is anti-NMDAR encephalitis, characterized by prominent psychiatric, cognitive and autonomic symptoms, which are linked to presence of autoantibodies targeting the NMDARs.
