Political and media propaganda during socialism - a semiotic analysis at the representation of Josip Broz Tito on magazine covers

U ovom radu definirani su ključni pojmovi vezani uz politiku, propagandu, kult ličnosti i totalitarizam. Rad se osvrće na politički kontekst jugoslavenskog socijalizma i govori o značajnim umjetničkim pokretima toga razdoblja, propituje medijsku propagandu i načine kontrole medijskog prostora, razmatra propagandne ustanove i njihove manipulacijske tehnike. U sklopu istraživanja analizirane su naslovnice četiri značajna jugoslavenska časopisa (Polet, Arena, NIN i Ilustrovana Politika) i sedam časopisa zemalja zapadne demokracije (Time, Newsweek, Tempo, Illustrated, Life, Der Spiegel i Paris Match), objavljenih u razdoblju od završetka Drugog svjetskog rata do smrti Josipa Broza Tita 1980. godine. Osim toga, rad se putem četiri naslovnice (Krokodil, Neue Berliner Illustrierte i Mladina) osvrće i na posljedice antijugoslavenske propagande. Cilj rada bio je istražiti prisutnost propagandnih elemenata, tehnika i poruka na naslovnicama časopisa te utvrditi je li i na koji način stvoren kult ličnosti Tita.In this paper, key concepts related to politics, propaganda, personality cult, and totalitarianism are defined. The paper discusses the political context of Yugoslav socialism and addresses significant artistic movements of that period, explores media propaganda and ways of controlling the media space, and considers propaganda institutions and their manipulative techniques. Within the scope of the research, the covers of four significant Yugoslav magazines (Polet, Arena, NIN and Ilustrovana Politika) and seven magazines from Western democracies (Time, Newsweek, Tempo, Illustrated, Life, Der Spiegel and Paris Match), published from the end of World War II to the death of Josip Broz Tito in 1980. In addition, the paper examines the consequences of anti-Yugoslav propaganda through four covers (Krokodil, Neue Berliner Illustrierte and Mladina). The aim of the paper was to investigate the presence of propaganda elements, techniques and messages on magazine covers and to determine whether and how Tito's personality cult was created
