Att jämföra dödsorsaksstatistik – nordiskt och internationellt

Comparing data on causes of death between countries is often problematic due to differences in collection, reporting, classification, and publication. Internationally, the WHO and other actors have long coordinated the collection and processing of this data, and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) has since 1948 included instructions for this process. Since the introduction of the ICD in the Nordic countries in the 1950s, differences in classification and publication have remained despite efforts to improve Nordic and international co-ordination. In 1987, a Nordic WHO-centre for the classification of diseases was established. The centre was led by Björn Smedby and would be prominent in the development of ICD. Over time, comparability within the Nordics and internationally has improved, and new information technology offers opportunities for further improvements.Att jämföra dödsorsaksstatistik mellan olika länder är ofta problematiskt på grund av exempelvis olikheter i dödsorsaksundersökning samt hur statistiken rapporteras, klassificeras och publiceras. Internationellt har WHO och andra aktörer sedan lång tid tillbaka samordnat hur dödsorsaksdata samlas in och bearbetas och den internationella sjukdomsklassifikationen (ICD) har sedan 1948 innehållit anvisningar för hur insamling, klassificering och publicering ska ske. De nordiska länderna införde ICD redan tidigt 1950-tal. Skillnader i klassificeringsregler och publicering kvarstod dock och genom åren har insatser genomförts för att förbättra den nordiska och internationella samordningen. År 1987 inrättandes ett nordiskt WHO-center för klassifikation av sjukdomar. Centret leddes av Björn Smedby och fick en framträdande roll i uppdateringen av ICD. Över tid har jämförbarheten ökat i Norden och internationellt, och ny informationsteknologi kan medföra möjligheter till ytterligare förbättringar
