The question concerning the content of the concepts of sickness and inability to work within the sickness insurance legislation has lately been of great interest of the reason that the insured person has had big difficulties getting reimbursed when sick. Large transfer costs have affected the social welfare field, where the individual will be placed when the possibilities to sickness benefits are lacking. Here the development of the latest two decades concerning the medical and legal content of the concepts of sickness and inability to work will be discussed and analysed in order to clarify where we stand today.
