Information is needed on the characteristics, attitudes, and goals of landowners, both from secondary sources and from direct surveys, in order to develop and implement effective land use policies and programs. This report gathers and evaluates landownership data on the 13 Northeast States — Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The U.S. Bureau of the Census, U.S. Forest Service, and local government offices are the three main sources of data now available concerning land and landowners.
