Socialists in Bilbao. Local Electoral Dynamics and Municipal Political Action in the Process of Emergence of a Large Urban Agglomeration (1891-1905)

This article aims to contribute to the widening of one of the most solidly established lines of research in Spanish historiography in recent decades: the one related to the evolution of Spanish socialism. Starting from a specific case study, correlated with the city of Bilbao between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the connections between two thematic fronts are addressed, which, however, have not received preferential attention in the numerous views perspectives deployed on the organised workers' movement. On the one hand, the dynamics that were glimpsed in the electoral trajectory of socialism at the local level, connected with voter mobilization efforts and the techniques and strategies applied by the political formation, as regards both the promotion of learning and free exercise of the right of vote and its recruitment at the socio-spatial level, in the context of the municipal elections held between 1891 and 1905. On the other hand, the patterns of conduct that the organisation assumed when developing a municipal political action imbued with the principles of the implemented in France and coherent with the programmatic and discursive profiles defined in the electoral campaigns.Este artículo ambiciona contribuir al ensanchamiento de una de las líneas de investigación más sólidamente afianzadas en la historiografía española de los últimos decenios: la relacionada con la evolución del socialismo español. Partiendo de un caso de estudio específico, correlacionado con la ciudad de Bilbao entre finales del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, se abordan las conexiones entre dos frentes temáticos que, sin embargo, no han sido objeto de una atención preferencial en las numerosas miradas desplegadas sobre el movimiento obrero organizado. De una parte, las dinámicas que se vislumbraron en la trayectoria electoral del socialismo a nivel local, conectadas con la movilización del voto y las técnicas y estrategias aplicadas por la formación política, tanto en lo relativo al fomento de su aprendizaje y libre ejercicio como en lo concerniente a su captación a nivel socioespacial, en el contexto de las elecciones municipales celebradas entre 1891 y 1905. De otra parte, los patrones de conducta que la organización asumió a la hora de desarrollar una acción política municipal imbuida de los principios de la implementada en Francia y coherente con los perfiles programáticos y discursivos definidos en las campañas electorales
