El primer PSOE ante el sufragio universal (1879-1891): el movimiento obrero como agente democratizador en el sistema de la Restauración

The beginnings of the labour movement in contemporary history that addresses the nineteenth century, both internationally and in its national histories, are usually linked, in practical terms, to the economic struggle in the class society shaped by the Industrial Revolution and, in theoretical terms, to the ideological evolution of its different organized currents. It is already in the studies dedicated to the twentieth century where we find the greatest incidence of the role played by the labour movement in the democratisation of contemporary societies. Taking into account the key influence that socialism would have on this process in Spain, this paper analyses the most remote origins of its democratizing political practice around the question of universal suffrage in the systemic context of the Restoration with the aim of understanding the foundations of a subject that would bring thousands of people into the political society of the period for the first time.Los inicios del movimiento obrero en la historia contemporánea que aborda el siglo XIX, tanto a escala internacional como en sus historias nacionales, suelen vincularse, en términos prácticos, a la pugna económica en la sociedad de clases configurada a raíz de la Revolución Industrial y, en términos teóricos, a la evolución ideológica de sus diferentes corrientes organizadas. Es ya en los estudios dedicados al siglo XX donde encontramos mayor incidencia del papel que jugó el movimiento obrero en la democratización de las sociedades contemporáneas. Teniendo en cuenta la influencia clave que el socialismo tendría en este proceso en España, el presente trabajo analiza los orígenes más remotos de su práctica política democratizadora en torno a la cuestión del sufragio universal en el contexto sistémico de la Restauración con el objetivo de comprender las bases de las que partió un sujeto que sumaría a miles de personas por primera vez a la sociedad política de la época
