Perspectivas científicas sobre experiências religiosas: um breve balanço do legado de William James na produção acadêmica recente

This article takes the seminal work of William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902) as a starting point for a fruitful debate on how best to explain the phenomenon of religious experiences. There are two poles in contemporary scientific production, which we can call “reductionist” and “non-reductionist”. Both originated under the influence of 20th century literature, renewing the debate in the 21st century in the light of new empirical evidence that allows not only to cast other looks on James' contribution, but also to open new perspectives of analysis on the religious experiences, as well as alternatives to reconcile the two poles. It is concluded that James' legacy can lead us to quite different paths, which, before revealing a difficulty in understanding his heritage, affirms the multiplicity of alternatives that we have to try to understand this complex phenomenon of religious experiences.Este artigo toma o trabalho seminal de William James, As variedades da experiência religiosa (1902) como um ponto de partida de um profícuo debate sobre quais as melhores formas de explicar o fenômeno das experiências religiosas. Há dois pólos na produção científica contemporânea, que podemos chamar de “reducionista” e “não reducionista”. Tanto um como o outro originaram-se sob influência da literatura do século XX, renovando o debate no século XXI à luz de novos indícios empíricos que permitem não só lançar outros olhares sobre a contribuição de James, como também abrir novas perspectivas de análise sobre as experiências religiosas, bem como alternativas para conciliar os dois pólos. Conclui-se que o legado de James pode nos levar a caminhos bastante distintos, o que antes de revelar uma dificuldade de compreensão da sua herança, afirma a multiplicidade de alternativas que dispomos para tentar compreender esse o fenômeno complexo das experiências religiosas
