Parish Adult Councils: A Study of Holy Name Parish Council, Coordinating Youth Activities in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, N. Y. 1958–1962

Background of the Study. One of the primary functions of the Catholic Youth Organization is to provide a fuller and a richer leisure time program for Catholic youth. The degree of success in reaching this goal depends greatly on the youth program in each parish of the diocese. There are many means and methods of conducting such a program. Some parishes are highly organized with a governing structure, a smooth working delegation of responsibility and equitable division of labor among many volunteers. In such a program many youth are served, usually in a wide variety of activities. There were few such programs in the Brooklyn Diocese at the time of this study. Other parishes have a program where one person does everything. Often the individual in such a setting is a most capable, zealous and willing person. We simply mean everything revolves around him - practically everything is usually done by him. He might serve in the role of coach, teacher, treasurer, secretary, fund raiser and collector, etc. He may be the priest of the parish or he may be a layman
