Timeliness of the Study. Alcoholism is a major economic, social, medical and police problem in American society today. The number of alcoholics in the United States is estimated at four to five million whose infirmity has resulted in a lower standard of living for approximately twenty-five million people. Alcoholics also represent a tremendous industrial toll; surveys indicate that 3 per cent of the nation\u27s workers are problem drinkers whose wage loss is estimated close to $432 million a year.
