Feasibility study for implementation of a test jig for seating furniture : A pilot study with associated fixture for chair legs

This report is a thesis project for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Innovation and Design. It is conducted in collaboration with a company seeking assistance in the initial testing phase of their self-manufactured seating furniture. The project was carried out during spring 2023 at Karlstad University and comprises 22.5 hp. The project aims to conduct a feasibility study on furniture testing and standards for seating furniture, enabling the company to improve their products through physical testing and ensure the desired durability. Additionally, a floor fixture will be developed to provide stability during testing. This work leverages knowledge of steel manufacturing and distribution to help the company maintain their competitive products. Following established product development processes, the project is structured into phases: project planning, feasibility study, requirement specification, concept selection, final presentation, and final report. The project delivered a feasibility study covering sustainability, global goals, testing methods (physical and digital), furniture testing standards, seating furniture, steel structures, the Machinery Directive, and CE marking. Furthermore, a concept proposal for a robust and simple fixture was developed, consisting of a large steel base plate with T-slots. Chair legs are securely attached by welding them to a small rectangular steel footplate, which is then fastened to the base plate using screws and T-slot nuts
