Hemipenthes morio Linnaeus

Hemipenthes morio (Linnaeus) (Figs. 16, 77–78) Musca morio Linnaeus, 1758: 590. Bibio morio (Linnaeus): Schrank, 1801: 90. Anthrax morio (Linnaeus): Panzer, 1796: Heft 32, pl. 18. Lectotype female of Musca morio designated by Evenhuis & Greathead (1999: 447) in LSUK. Diagnosis: Mesopleuron and sides of first abdominal tergite white or pale yellow pilose; wings without aureoles; cell a and cup entirely infuscated; cell r 1 not entirely infuscated; r 2 + 3 cell with basal half infuscated; dm cell infuscated at least on its basal third; cell r 5 not narrowed at wing margin; first abdominal tergite with bands of white scales. Description: Male. Body length: 8–12 mm; wing length: 9–11 mm Head: Eyes separated by a little more than width of ocellar triangle. Front black pilose, yellowish tomentose. Face black, rounded, with black hairs and yellowish tomentum. Scape black, swollen on inner apical margin, with black hairs, twice as long as pedicel; pedicel black, twice as wide as long, with short black hairs; flagellomere black, longer than scape and pedicel combined; base subconical, tapering to styliform apical two-thirds; stylus minute, terminal. Proboscis short, not projecting beyond oral margin. Palpi black with black hairs. Occiput with short black and yellow hairs and yellowish scales. Abdomen: Mesonotum anterior margin yellowish pilose; lateral margin entirely yellowish pilose; tomentum on disc entirely yellowish, long, hairlike, not dense; bristles black. Mesopleuron black pilose with yellowish hairs mixed in on proepisternum and anepisternum, katatergite yellow pilose; tomentum on katepisternum pale yellow. Proepimeron with black and yellow hairs. Mid coxa with black hairs, tomentum on all coxae hairlike, yellowish. Legs brown, tarsi fulvous, femora black pilose, white hairs on mid femur, black and yellow tomentose; bristles black. Halter steam brownish, knob yellow. Scutellum brown, black pilose, and yellowish tomentose along posterior margin, a spot of black tomentum in middle at base; bristles mixed yellowish and black. Black setulae on basicosta. Cells c, sc, br, bm, cup and a entirely infuscated (Fig. 16); cells r 1 with two basal thirds infuscated; cells cua 1 and dm with basal half infuscated; cells r 2 + 3, r 5 and m 2 with basal third infuscated; cell dm infuscated beyond r-m crossvein; r-m crossvein at or slightly beyond middle of cell dm; no crossvein between R 4 and R 2 + 3; cell r 5 not narrowed at wing margin; first section of vein CuA 1 one and a half the long of r-m crossvein, second section one and a half the long of r-m crossvein, third section one a half the long of first two sections combined; cell a as wide as cell cup; alula slightly developed. Abdomen: Abdominal dorsum white pilose, some black hairs on tergites five to seven; black tomentum overall except a crossband of white tomentum on apical half of first tergite, scattered whitish and yellowish scales on sides; sides of abdomen with first, second and basal half of third tergites whitish pilose, rest black pilose. Venter white pilose on sternites one to four, rest black pilose, whitish tomentose. Genitalia brown with yellowish hairs. Epandrium in lateral view, rectangular, lower margin concave in middle, basal corner narrowed; gonocoxite narrow, basal half enlarged; gonostylus small, hooked apically; epiphallus in lateral view narrow (Fig. 77) slightly curved, not cap-shaped, apex swollen, rounded; with a ventral extension broad at base with apex acuminate, portion of the epiphallus behind ventral extension longer than aedeagus; epiphallus in ventral view broad (Fig. 78), lateral margins narrowed at both sides at middle, with scattered spines in the middle and dense spines at apex; aedeagus broad at base narrowed at apex, not swollen dorsally; gonopore terminal. Female. Nearly identical to male. Eyes separated by twice width of ocellar triangle. Distribution: Palearctic. Specimens examined: Germany. (1 male genitalia, 1 female; USNM). Hungary. (1 female; USNM). France. (1 female; USNM). Remarks: Hemipenthes morio is similar to H. morioides and H. seminigra. It can be distinguished from H. morioides by the lack of aureoles in the wings. The European specimens of H. morio, listed above, can be distinguished from H. seminigra by having the cell r 5 not narrowed at wing margin and the margin epiphallus narrowed before apex in ventral view (Fig. 78). But the specimens examined identified as H. morio from North America from Quebec, Canada; Arizona, Idaho, Utah, Washington, USA are identical to those from H. seminigra even in its genital characters H. morio has been considered to be Holarctic in distribution but the evidence shown here indicates that H. morio is in fact Palearctic; and the specimens determined as H. morio in North America are really specimens from H. seminigra.Published as part of Ávalos-Hernández, Omar, 2009, A review of the North American species of Hemipenthes Loew, 1869 (Diptera: Bombyliidae), pp. 1-49 in Zootaxa 2074 on pages 45-46, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18715
