186. Taddei’s Serotine Eptesicus taddeii French: Sérotine de Taddei / German: Taddei-Breitflligelfledermaus / Spanish: Eptesicus de Taddei Taxonomy. Eptesicus taddenr Miranda, Bernardi & Passos, 2006, “Fazenda Monjolo, District of Sao Luiz do Puruna, Municipality of Balsa Nova, State of Parana, Southern Brazil (25°26'58"S and 49°41'51"W).” Eptesicus taddeu 1s closely related to E. brasiliensis, both in syntopy. Additional research is necessary to better delimit their taxonomic and ecological boundaries. Moreover, comparisons of E. taddeii with large congeners were poorly discussed in the original description and should be better evaluated. Monotypic. Distribution. SE & S Brazil (Sao Paulo, Parana, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul states). Descriptive notes. Head—body ¢.56-63 mm,tail 42-7-53-3 mm, ear 14-17-2 mm, forearm 44-1-48-7 mm; weight 12-17-5 g. Females are larger than males. Dorsal hairs of Taddei’s Serotine are c¢. 7 mm long and bicolored, with brown bases and red tips; ventral hairs have dark brown bases and red tips. Face, ears, and membranes are blackish. Ears are small and subtriangular; tragus has smooth edges and slightly acuminated tip. Muzzle is noticeably inflated. Upper lip has row ofhairs. Nasal opening is V-shaped. I? is spatulated and bilobed; I? is small and subconical; C! is separated from I’ by small gap; M' and M* are subquadrate in occlusal view, with W-shaped cusps; M”is subtriangular; lower incisors are trilobed; and lower molars are similar in shape, decreasing in size from M, to M. Habitat. Brazilian Atlantic Forest in araucaria pine forests, semideciduous forests, dense ombrophilous forests, and secondary and regenerating forests at elevations of 30-1255 m. Food and Feeding. Taddei’s Serotine is insectivorous. Breeding. One pregnant Taddei’s Serotine was captured in March. Activity patterns. Taddei’s Serotines are nocturnal; they have been captured throughout the night. Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information. Status and Conservation. Classified as Data Deficient on The IUCN Red List. Tadder’s Serotine is restricted to an area of ¢. 64,500 km?, butit seems locally common. Known records are, in general, located in Atlantic Forest remnants that are fragmented, under severe human threats, and surrounded by large extensions of commercial plantations or urban settlements.
