Despite the significant changes that have taken place in recent years, corruption, violations of citizens' rights and other negative factors related to police misconduct have often been common during police reform. Such circumstances form a negative, suspicious, biased attitude of the population both to the police and to the content of the police reform itself, which is designed to build trust between the population and the police, undermine the authority of both the National Police and the state authorities as a whole. The strengthening of legality and discipline is facilitated by the identification of perpetrators of official, disciplinary offenses of police officers and bringing them to justice, which is ensured by timely and high-quality official investigations into the facts of disciplinary misconduct of police officers. The article, based on the analysis of scientific views of scientists, explores theoretical approaches to the definition of the terms "disciplinary proceedings" and "service investigation". Substantially, an investigative inquiry is a necessary element of disciplinary proceedings, which is an administrative and procedural activity carried out by a specially authorized body. The most characteristic features of the official investigation in the bodies of the National Police of Ukraine are determined.
