Ensuring the quality and effective functioning of the justice system in Ukraine directly depends on a correct interpretation of the concept of "competence of a judge". When selecting and improving the skills of judges only on the basis of deep theoretical knowledge and research results in this area it is possible to form specific recommendations for improving organizational and legal mechanisms to ensure proper competence as a condition of independence of judges and effective administration of justice. justice and public confidence in the judiciary. The article carries out a theoretical and legal study of the concept of "judge's competence". The existence of different approaches to the interpretation of the concept of competence is emphasized. The existing definitions are analyzed, the structure of this concept is revealed and the main components are characterized. Taking into account the key provisions that characterize the concept of a judge's competence, a new definition is proposed. According to the results of the study it was found that: - the concept of competence of a judge is in the main features close to the general interdisciplinary concept of competence, but has significant differences associated with the presence of strict legal regulations of individual components; - while for other professions the definition of the concept of competence and the importance of its individual structural elements is determined mostly individually, taking into account the specifics of the entities and can be assessed subjectively, the assessment of judges' competence requires a unified approach and efficiency, which is a guarantee of compliance with the principle of unity of the status of judges; - the definition of the concept of «judge's competence» is detailed through its special properties and key components and allows to justify future changes in the system of selection, training and career advancement of a judge
