Flowers bisexual and pistillate, solitary or paired in the leaf axils; perianth 5-lobed, connate to just below the apex; fruiting perianth hardened at the base with 3 soft, horn-like appendages and with a slit opposite the radicle. Pericarp membranous; seeds horizontal; embryo annular; radicle centrifugal; perisperm abundant.
