The evolution of doctoral education

Eurodoc Newsletter Issue #21 This Newsletter was prepared by the Eurodoc Doctoral Training Working Group. The issue is aimed, especially, at the doctoral training and career development of early career researchers (ECRs). The topic was chosen due to crucial significance, value and quality of doctoral training in higher education and research policies both at European and national level. Moreover, a number of doctoral holders in Europe has been increasing for the last two decades, that lead to diversifying of their career paths inside and outside academia. ECRs need to be sufficiently prepared not only for the academic career, but for the non - academic labour market as well. Formal education and training should equip doctoral candidates with broad range of skills which opens doors to personal fulfilment and professional development, social engagement, active citizenship and employment
