The smartphone as a teaching tool

This article presents a study on the educational uses and appropriation of cell phones. For the research, a random sample of 954 students and 246 teachers was selected, representing respectively 12% and 24% of the total population in two facilities of UABC in Ensenada, Mexico. Our survey showed that 97% of teachers or students have some kind of cell phone or smartphone. We found that in general the educational use of the cell phone is mainly aimed to establish communication between the students, to access information via Internet and organization. The main disadvantages identified were: distraction and high cost of connection. The most mentioned advantages were the possibility of having communication and access to information anytime, anywhere. Undoubtedly the smartphone has great pedagogical potential; however it is necessary to extend researches to its proper incorporation into the educational process.Se presenta un estudio sobre cobertura y usos educativos del celular con estudiantes y docentes de dos campi de la UABC. Se seleccionó una muestra al azar con 12% de estudiantes y 24% de docentes, a quienes se les aplicaron una encuesta para precisar la posesión de celular, sus características técnicas, los usos educativos realizados y las ventajas y desventajas de su uso en cursos universitarios. La posesión de teléfono celular se acerca a 97% tanto para estudiantes como para docentes. Los principales usos educativos fueron para comunicación, manejo de información y organización. Las desventajas señaladas fueron, entre otras, distracción y costo elevado de conexión. Las ventajas mayormente mencionadas fueron la bondad de contar con comunicación y acceso a la información en todo momento y lugar. Sin duda, el smartphone tiene gran potencial pedagógico; sin embargo, es necesario ampliar las investigaciones para su adecuada incorporación al proceso educativo universitario
